Bacteria sa Dagat Nakamamatay

Ilang tao na ang naiulat na namatay sanhi ng isang bacteria sa dagat. Ayon sa ABC Action News sa Amerika, may namatay na sa Sarasota County dahil sa bacteria na tinatawag na vibrio vulnificus. Ang bacteria na ito ay nabibilang sa mga klase ng bacteria na nagdudulot ng Cholera at natatagpuan ito sa maligamgam na tubig-alat. Base sa ulat ng Florida Department of Health: “Yamang ito’y likas na matatagpuan sa maligamgam na tubig ng dagat, nanganganib ang mga taong may nakabukang sugat sa Vibrio vulnificus kapag sila’y nabasa ng tubig-alat.”

Ayon sa pinakahuling ulat, tatlumpu’t dalawa na ang naospital, at sampung katao na ang namatay dahil sa Vibrio vulnificus bacteria sa karagatan ng Florida. Noong 2013, apatnapu’t isa ang tinamaan at labing-isa ang pumanaw. Hindi lamang ito namataan sa Florida. Maging sa Alabama, Louisiana, Texas at Mississippi ay may naiulat na ring mga kaso.

“Nakapanlulumo dahil ang beach ang isa sa mga pinakasikat na libangan dito sa Florida,” wika ni Tracy Brown ng West Palm Beach. Ayon kay Brown na masayang naglilibang sa beach kasama ang kaniyang anak na babae, wala pa siyang nabalitaan tungkol sa Vibrio bacteria. Nagitla siya nang malaman na maaaring magkasakit sa simpleng pagtapak lamang sa tubig-dagat.

Pinayuhan ng mga dalubhasa ng Florida Department of Health ang sinumang may kahinaan sa kanilang immune system o sinumang may nakabukang sugat na huwag lalapit sa tubig-dagat. Kung mayroon mang tatalon sa dagat, siguraduhin nilang maghugas nang mabuti bago sila umuwi.

“Kailangan talaga nating maging seryoso sa bagay na ito, pero may ilan pang mga bacteria na makakasalamuha natin,” sabi ni Tim O’Connor, tagapahayag ng Florida Department of Health.

Bukod sa tubig, ang mapanganib na bacteria na ito ay maaaring makuha sa pagkain ng hilaw na seafood gaya ng talaba (oysters). Kaya, kung may balak kang pumunta sa dagat, alaming mabuti ang lahat ng paraan upang maging ligtas sa anumang panganib.

Tuko: Gamot sa AIDS at Ibang Sakit?

Binalaan ng mga awtoridad ang publiko sa iligal na pangangalakal ng tuko (gecko in English) sa Pilipinas, kung saan malaking halaga daw ng pera ang pagkakakitaan.

 

Ayon kay Atty. Sixto Comia, hepe ng Environment and Wildlife Protection Investigation Division sa NBI, maaaring hoax lang ito ng mga crime syndicate. Inihalintulad ito ni Comia sa modus operandi ng Budol-Budol Gang. “Yung subject nila bibili ‘yan ng maraming tuko sa buyer. Kapag ibebenta na ng subject ang tuko sa buyer, wala na ‘yung buyer. Parang ‘Budol-Budol,’” wika ni Comia. Itago natin sa pangalang “Rudy” ang isang collector ng tuko na nagtitinda ng tuko sa halagang Php300.

“Maraming gusto mag-alaga niyan dahil kapag napalaki nila, maraming presyo na,” paliwanag ni Rudy.

 

May mga ulat na ang mga tuko na tumitimbang sa 400 gramo ay naibebenta hanggang Php500 milyon. Subalit, ayon sa imbestigasyon ng NBI, ang mga tuko sa Pilipinas ay tumitimbang hanggang 100 gramo lamang.

 

Hindi rin maaari na ang isang tuko ay magkahalaga ng milyong-milyong piso, ulat ng NBI.

 

Sinumang mahuli na nangongolekta ng mga tuko ay puwedeng sampahan ng kaso laban sa Republic Act 9147 o mas kilala sa Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

 

Isyu sa Kalusugan

Usap-usapan ang di-umano’y gamot sa enzymes na galing sa apdo ng tuko, na siyang nagpadami sa iligal na pangangalakal nito.

Pinabulaanan mismo ng DOH ang haka-hakang gamot daw sa AIDS ang tuko.

Binalaan ni Dr. Eric Tayag, tagapagsalita ng DOH, ang madla sa pagkain ng tuko na maaaring magdulot ng food poisoning.

Wala din daw basehan sa medisina o agham ang pagkain ng tuko upang magamot ang mga karamdaman tulad ng AIDS at hika (asthma).

Pinabulaanan din ng isang espesyalista sa human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) at sexually- transmitted diseases (STDs) ang ukol dito.

Biringan: Enchanted City

Stories still persist of an invisible city situated between Gandara, Tarangnan, and Pagsanghan, Samar, in Eastern Visayas (Coordinates: 11°57’47”N 124°46’21”E). It’s not the usual land and water terrain in which people inhabit. The city, according to stories, exists in a parallel dimension. It’s like a movie from Avatar. The mere mention of the city evokes fear, awe, and hushed silence. Yet, if you insist and beg for more information about this enchanted city, the townsfolk of Samar have more than enough to tell.

 

Biringan is a Waray (Visayan) word which means “a place to look for lost people” or hanapan ng mga taong nawawala. It is said that there are seven (7) portals leading to Biringan. One of these portals is an old yet huge Balete tree located in a school. According to eyewitness accounts, Biringan is a sprawling metropolis with high-rise buildings, cathedrals, splendid structures, and massive infrastructure similar to New York, Hongkong, and Singapore. The only difference is, the city is inhabited by otherworldly beings – engkantos, or elementals, at worse, demons?

 

Some folks say that the good engkantos live within the city, while the bad engkantos live in the outskirts, outside the city itself. They say that these engkantos would “capture” humans who venture alone, usually, near their city. Why? It could be because they are “attracted” to the human, who may either be a pretty lass or a handsome lad, or they “pity” this particular person, or worse, they “envy” this mortal being. In some instances, these engkantos would even “pick” a mortal in crowded areas like a beach or park and bewitch the unfortunate soul. The Warays refer to a particular Visayan term: bugkot. The poor mortal is taken away from his/her world by way of transition: the mortal experiences sudden “death” (an accident, mysterious illness, or a sudden disappearance from one’s present location). In fact, the person didn’t die but his/her consciousness or spirit is taken to Biringan. If you’re a movie buff, check out T2 starring Maricel Soriano. A good portion of the film describes the engkantos. The movie producers did some detailed researching on engkantos and the film location did appear to be in Samar.

 

It was said that a long queue of jeepneys filled with cavans of rice, grocery items, etc. were destined to Biringan City. At some time, residents in Samar also reported the influx of luxury cars, high-end and very expensive technical gear, heavy equipment coming even from the US, and drone-like flying objects.  Who could afford such luxury in Samar? But they have been fully paid in advance and the address states Biringan City, although the person named has been assumed dead by the townsfolk.

 

There’s more: a Japanese group under the implementing agency of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) conducted a rural development project focused on the town of San Jorge. This was sometime in the late 1980’s through the 1990’s. Majority of the residents were puzzled as to why the Japanese would concentrate on San Jorge when there were a lot more towns in the province in need of more rural development. Vast deposits of uranium were believed to be buried deep beneath that area. Philippine folklore was ripe with stories of elementals keeping careful guard over immense treasures in the forests or deep underground. Nevertheless, the Japanese group abandoned the area without any concrete action for “rural development”.

Isang Filipino-Norwegian conglomerate na bumuo ng isang exploration at kumpanya ng pagmimina, Siargao Island Mining Development Corporation ay nagpahiwatig na ng pagnanais na ma-explore at mamina ang malalaking Deuterium gas deposits sa Siargao Island na magba-base sa baybaying bayan ng Pilar.

Ang conglomerate ay nag-apply ng 1,500 kilometrong lapad, haba at lalim na area concession mula sa Pilar, Surigao del Norte sa Isla ng Siargao sa gayon, ang exploration ay aabot ng mainland Surigao”, sabi ni Matugas na Chairman ng House Committee on Environment, sa mga peryodistang dumalo sa press conference.

Sa isang press conference na ginanap sa Provincial Capito dito. First District Surigao del Norte Representative Francisco Matugas at gobernador ng Surigao del Norte, Si Matugas ay nagsabing ang conglomerate ay nag-apply na para sa land survey, exploration permit sa Bureau of Mines and Geo-Sciences.

“Sa pagsuri pa lang ng lupain, mga preparasyon at explorations, umaasa tayong daan-daang Surigaonans ang mabibigyan ng trabaho ng conglomerate”, sabi ng Surigao del Norte solon.

Sabi ni Matugas na noon ay nagkaroon ng pagpupulong sa pagitan niya, ng gobernador at mga opisyal ng conglomerate at ng Philippine government’s Bureau of Mines.

“Isang malaking deposito ng 868 milyang haba, 53 milya sa pinakamalapad na bahagi at 3 milya sa pinakamalalim na punto, pinapalitan ng kalikasan 24 na oras sa isang oras pagkatapos na ang deuterium ay maglakbay ng higit pa sa 12,000 kilometro mula sa Central Amerika hanggang Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng Pacific Ocean kapag ang planetang Earth ay umikot sa axis nito mula kanluran patungong Silangan sa isang walang katapusang perpetwal na mosyon.

Sabi ni Dr. Halog na sa ganitong existence may pang-ekonomiyang potensyal ito na 12 milyong bariless isang araw na may presyohang 7 dolyar kada bariles, ito’y 84 milyon kada araw o 30.66 bilyon sa isang taon, sapat na upang mabayaran ang anumang utang ng Pilipinas sa mga dayuhan sa loob ng isang taon, revenue wise in foreign exchange.

Mahigit dalawampung taon na ang nakararaan, isang Doktora Nona Calo mula sa lungsod ng Butuan sa Mindanao ay nagpalagay na merong napakalaking deposito ng “deuterium” na matatagpuan sa dagat ng Pilipinas, sa may karagatan ng Surigao. Unang natuklasan ito at pinag-aralan noong 1932 ng isang Amerikanong Chemist na si Harold Urey, ang deuterium o “heavy water” ay magkasanib na dalawang isotopes ng hydrogen at oxygen atom na may chemical formula ng D20 o H30. Kapag mas marami ang hydrogen molecules kaysa ordinaryong tubig, ito’y mas mabigat kaysa tubig at maging sa tubig alat kaya ito ay natural na bumababa sa kailaliman ng dagat.

Ayon kay Anthony B. Halog (PhD, MBA), na nagtatrabaho sa Sustainable Technology Office ng Institute for Chemical Process and Environmental Technology, National Research Council sa Ottawa, Canada, “Ang Philippine trench, ang pinakamalaki sa buong mundo ay may 868 milya ang haba, 52 milya ang luwag sa pinakamalapad na bahagi at 2 milya ang lalim sa pinakamalalim na bahagi kung saan ito ay 10.057 kilometro below sea level. Ang Deuterium ay makukuha mula sa lalim na ito na mahigit 7 kilometro below sea level sa ilalim ng 10,000 psi of ocean pressure, na pinapalitan ng kalikasan sa loob ng 24 oras sa isang araw mula sa Central America patawid sa malawak na Pacific Ocean. Bagama’t ang pagmimina ng deuterium ay hindi pa nagagawa, kahit ng mga highy developed first world countries at ang posibleng halaga nito ay lubhang nakakalula, ang pagsasaliksik sa oportunidad na ito ay worth it pa rin na paglaanan. Ang programang ito ay maaaring maglunsad sa Pilipinas bilang pinakamalaking hydrogen fuel (Li-Hy) producer sa mundo, at maging tanging fuel producer sa loob ng 40 hanggang 50 taon mula ngayon sa isang ekonomiyang mundong naubusan na ng langis. Gamit ang expertise ng Philippine National Oil Corporation (PNOC) sa pamamagitan ng isa nitong departamento na nakatuon sa indigenous at non-traditional sources, ang gobyerno ay maaaring magproyekto ng deuterium research program at hydrogen (Li-Hy) production project ng may kaluwagan kung project organization at administration ang pag-uusapan.

Hindi porke’t hindi pa ito nagagawa dati, hindi ibig sabihin na hindi na ito makakayang gawin. Ang pagmimina ng Deuterium ay tulad lang ng praktikal na pag-pump ng tubig mula sa ilalim ng dagat. Ang pangkasalukuyang teknolohiya sa offshore na produksyon ng langis ay hanggang sa lalim na 6.4 kilometro lamang mula sa sea level, at kailangan pa nilang humukay sa ilalim ng dagat para marating ang langis, daan-daang metro below sea floor. Kung sa expertise ang pag-uusapan, napatunayan na ng mga Pilipinong inhinyero at mga technicians sa PNOC ang kanilang kahusayan at nag-export pa ng kanilang kakayanan sa Japan sa paggawa ng geothermal plants, kung saan ang instalasyon nito ay may kumplikado at mapanganib kung ikukumpara.

Ang tidal conditions sa kahabaan ng Philippine Trench ay kailangang isama sa pagsasaliksik at pag-aaral buong isang taon. Ang Petroleum production sa North Sea, na matatagpuan sa pagitan ng Isla ng Britanya at Norway, ay patuloy lang ng walang hinto sa kabila ng perennial disturbances sa tubig at marahas na climactic condition sa lugar mula sa mayelong lamig at ordinaryong malamig na temperatura. Ang Pacific climate at condition ay katamtaman kung may pagkukumpara. Ang bilang ng mga oil rigs sa North Sea ay mga 170 hanggang sa 200 milya mula sa pinakamalapit na daungan, kumpara sa posibleng site sa Philippine trench na 100 milya lamang mula sa Lungsod ng Surigao at 120 miya mula sa Lungsod ng Tacloban. Kung ang mga trabahador sa North Sea oil rigs ay kailangang magtrabaho ng tig-kalahating oras ng trabaho (dalawang linggong trabaho; dalwang linggong pahinga) sa buong taon dahil sa extreme at mapanganib na kundisyon ng pagtra-trabaho sa lugar, ang pagta-trabaho sa deuterium rigs sa Pacific ay parang nagbabakasyon lang sa isang isla ng Hawaii.

Ang mga Oil rig platform manufacturers sa Singapore ay maaaring magbuo ng mga espesyal na disenyong platforms sa halagang $100-150 milyong dolyar o humigit-kumulang ay P5-7.5 bilyong piso. Sa total cost na P10 bilyong piso para sa research at paggawa ng single floating deuterium rig na may average na kapasidad na produksyon na 50,000 barrels isang araw, ang gobyerno ay makaasa ng konserbatibong arawang kita na 4 milyong dolyar o 1.28 milyong dolyar kada taon o 54 bilyong piso annually. Kung ang gobyerno ay ay gagawa ng isang deuterium rig taon-taon, kumikita ng 1.28 milyong dolya, ang utang sa World Bank ay mababayaran sa loob ng hindi hihigit sa 15 taon. Ang budget para rito ay kaya naman ng gobyerno natin. Kung kinaya ng gobyerno ang 40 bilyong piso ng Pangulo na pork barrel noong 2006 para sa iba’t-ibang programa para maiangat ang kalagayan ng mga mahihirap, kaya ng gobyerno natin na magtayo ng isang deuterium rig taon-taon na may isang daang balik na kita.

Ayon sa estimates, meron lamang 1,000 bilyong barrels ng reserve petroleum na natitira sa mundo ngayon. Dahil sa gumagamit ng 28.6 bilyong bariles ng langis kada taon, lahat ng mga nakareserbang langis ay maauubos 35 taon mula ngayon. Ang mga pangangailangang enerhiya ng mundo sa gayon ay malilipat sa natural gas na mayroon tayong 3,457 trilyong cubic feet na reserba. Pero ang partikular na source na ito ay maaari ring maubos. Ang Hydrogen na may masagana at unlimited source sa deuterium ang siyang magiging reserbang enerhiya sa hinaharap. Kung magagamit lamang ng Pilipinas ang energy source na ito, maaari tayong magkaroon ng mas magandang kinabukasan at ekonomiya higit sa lahat sa mundo, kasama na ang United States of America. Kung tayo, bilang isang nasyon, ay maabot ang puntong ito sa ksaysayan, ang Pilipinas kung gayon ay maaaring isalarawan bilang ang alamat na lupang pangako….lupang inaapawan ng gatas at pulot pukyutan.

Ang Estados Unidos ay minsang nangarap na magpadala ng tao sa buwan. Ngayon ito’y bahagi na ng kasaysayan. Later in 1957, he earned the Bachelor of Divinity in one of the prestigious seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, the Southwestern Theological Seminary. Thereafter, Charles began his first pastorate in sharing the good news to the community at Fruitland Baptist Church in North Carolina.

After more than a decade of genuine devotion to serve God’s ministry, Dr. Stanley became the sixteenth pastor of the First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1971, Dr. Stanley earned his doctorate degree in Theology at Luther Rice Seminary. He launched the program called “The Chapel Hour” a year after. Few years then, Dr. Stanley’s published “In Touch”.

Highlights and Achievements

It was in 1979 that the In Touch magazine started out as newsletter. Later in 1980, Dr. Charles Stanley began preaching through local stations airing at KVMV-FM 96.9 in McAllen, Texas. Dr. Stanley certainly touched many lives by showing the importance of building a relationship with God. With this, he was inducted in to the National Religious Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame in 1988. His powerful, spiritually guided efforts brought forth the foundation of the international In Touch Ministry. Dr. Stanley gained support from various leaders in the religious sector. He continued to preach and his wisdom reached in different areas in US on his first radio broadcast known as the En Contacto in 1994. Unsurprisingly, the InTouch.org was launched in 1996, an online religious site hitting the waves around the web. His bible teachings have been translated into 107 languages reaching through hills and ditches around the world. Currently, the radio broadcast was aired at about 500 radio stations and televised at 300 stations worldwide.

Personal life

Dr. Charles Stanley’s divorce separation from his wife Anna did not hinder him to continue preaching. The First Baptist’s members in Atlanta tossed him on keeping him as a pastor based on the church bylaws saying that for as long as Dr. Stanley does not remarry, he shall remain eligible to devote his days as a pastor.

Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder may often be linked to above average intelligence and some facts

People with OCD follow routines of behavior. However, it is interesting to note that these people know what their obsessions and compulsions are.

Presently, studies show that causes of OCD are still on a hunt. Experts claimed that the Master theory may be considered a flop. However, it is an idea that sparks interest to the great men of physics. As of the moment, many believe that String Theory is the nearest to what we have in the theory of everything.  

Nikola Tesla: getting to know the man who is behind it all

Nikola Tesla, a Serbian- American inventor worked for Thomas Edison in the beginning of his career. He fixed motors and DC generators. However, when he asked Edison for a compensation for all his contribution, Edison laughed and said,” Tesla, you don’t understand our American humor.”

Tesla went to work on his alternating current electrical system and disappointed Edison, who was promoting on his direct electrical system. Comparing both, the former had system  only require thinner wires and could transmit electricity in far places. The latter need a power plant in every square mile and could only transport electricity in nearby places.

Families near Edison’s laboratory noticed that their pets were missing. This was because Edison paid schoolboys 25 cents a head for live dogs and cats. He then electrocuted these animals using Tesla’s alternating current, so that it can make it seem to people that the latter’s invention is not suitable for home use.

Marconi, the Nobel Prize winner for his invention of the radio simply based his work on Tesla’s inventions.  As stated by Tesla, he said “Marconi is a good fellow. Let him continue. He is using seventeen of my patents.”

On the lighter side of things, let’s talk about Tesla’s love life. Well, this guy focused his time and energy on innovations for the greater good. He somewhat found love in a hopeless place.  As quoted below:

“I have been feeding pigeons, thousands of them for years.  But there was one pigeon, a beautiful bird, pure white with light gray tips on its wings; that one was different.  It was a female. I would know that pigeon anywhere. No matter, where I was that pigeon would find me, when I wanted here I had only to wish and call her she would come flying to me. She understood me and I understood her.

I loved that pigeon.

Yes, I loved her as a man loves a woman, and she loves me. “

Above all, this guy is an absolute genius. No fuss, just pure science.

Chrono- Displacement Disorder: fictional or a brink of possibility?

review_illo,0Audrey Niffenegger’s first novel, The Time Traveller’s Wife, an international bestseller and produced on silver screen focused on Chrono- Displacement Disorder, which is the genetic illness of the future.  Henry DeTamble, the main character was first diagnosed and was thought to become the possible bringer of new species. In one of the occasions, he visits stages of his life that made an impact, such as the decapitation of his mom during while she drives her Ford car.

At times there are two lead Henrys coming from different times. Often there is none at all.

As told both in the movies and in the book, we all have a subjective clock in our heads and a circardian timepiece, which tells us whether it is morning or night.

Scientists cannot imagine how genes could ever make time traveling possible. However, a slightest possible is said to become a reality. Paul Davies, Australian Centre for Astrobiology and the author of How to Build a Time Machine stated that it is possible.
